THE TERMINATOR (1984) - "In the Year of Darkness, 2029, the rulers of this planet devised the ultimate plan. They would reshape the Future by changing the Past. The plan required something that felt no pity. No pain. No fear. Something unstoppable. They created THE TERMINATOR."
A cyborg sent from a post-apocalyptic America back to 1984 to assassinate a young waitress named Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is relentless and seemingly indestructable. All that stands in its way is Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn), a resistance soldier from the future whose mission is to protect Sarah Connor at all costs. This is the film that established director James Cameron as a master of action and special effects, while turning Arnold Schwarzenegger into the pumped-up star of the 1980s. Schwarzenegger's physical presence and sparse dialogue rendered him both chilling and charismatic, and his "I'll be back" catch phrase still resonates over three decades later. This is the very first of The Terminator films. This is the one not to miss!

REBECCA (1940) - "Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again..." And with that opening line from the greatest of Alfred Hitchcock's early movies, we are sucked into one of the finest adaptations of a gothic novel ever filmed. While vacationing on the Riviera, a shy young woman is courted by the aristocratic widower Maxim de Winter, and within days, the two are married. But when the bride arrives at her new home, the decaying estate of Manderley, she finds she’s not welcomed by all. Manderley's longtime housekeeper Mrs. Danvers instantly regards her with undisguised hostility and the memory of Rebecca, Maxim de Winter's deceased wife, increasingly overshadows her marriage. Rebecca's death is veiled in secrecy and the new Mrs. de Winter begins to uncover the shocking truth about her predecessor. Joan Fontaine is exquisite as the innocent bride who narrates the film, Lawrence Olivier is masterful playing the secretive Maxim, and Judith Anderson is unforgettably creepy as the sadistic Mrs. Danvers. Just as memorable as the cast is the mansion of Manderley which exudes an atmosphere of psychological menace that pervades the film. Adapted from the novel by Daphne Du Maurier, Rebecca was the first Hollywood movie Alfred Hitchcock directed and garnered two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Cinematography, as well as nominations for Best Lead Actor, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director. GOLDFINGER (1964) - James Bond (Sean Connery), Agent 007, is back! His assignment this time is to track millionaire gold smuggler Auric Goldfinger (Gert Frobe) who has hatched a plot to "neutralize" the United States gold reserve at Fort Knox. Goldfinger won't put up with Bond's interference with his nefarious plans (or with Bond's interference with his women) and unleashes one of the most memorable of all of Agent 007's adversaries - the mute Korean strongman, Oddjob (Harold Sakata). Just as unforgettable as the villains are the Bond women - the 24-karat Jill Masterson (Shirley Eaton), and the (unattainable?) Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman). Sean Connery's performance of Agent 007 achieves brutally suave perfection in this, the third Bond film, which set the standard for the entire series and established the hallmarks of the succeeding movies: the action-packed pre-title sequence, the memorable title song, and the incredible gadgets. Bond’s Aston Martin makes its film debut, with its bulletproof windows, front-mounted machine guns, oil slicks, smoke screens, and passenger ejector seat. Goldfinger deservedly took home the Oscar for Special Sound Effects. [more...]
