JAWS (1982) - When a gigantic man-eating great white shark ravages the small island community of Amity, a police chief (Roy Scheider), a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss), and a veteran fisherman (Robert Shaw) set out to stop it. They soon find they're going to need a bigger boat! As John Williams' musical score menacingly builds up to that famous thundering crescendo, you'll remember why Jaws remains one of the most terrifying films of the 20th century. Adapted from Peter Benchley's novel, this is the box-office blockbuster that established director Steven Spielberg as a force to be reckoned with. Inspired casting, a terrific plot, and Mother Nature's nastiest villain all combine to bring you the ultimate big-screen nail-biter! Jaws was nominated for Best Picture and won Oscars for Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Dramatic Music Score. [more...]

KIM KARDASHIAN WEST
LIVE - at the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St., San Francisco

Move Hailed as the first lady of fame, Kim Kardashian West has 29 million followers on Instagram, 31 million followers on Twitter, 10 seasons on E!, and two books. Join Kim Kardashian West presented by INFORUM for a public interview to dish on her new book Selfish, the Kardashian Jenner clan, the business of millennial culture, the objectification of women in media, and more.

WEST SIDE STORY (1961) - Writer Arthur Laurents, choreographer Jerome Robbins, lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and composer Leonard Bernstein took Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet into a New York City street gang setting and created a legend that remains one of the most exhilarating, passionate musicals you may ever see on screen. Shakespeare's Montagues and Capulets become two rival teen-age gangs: the "American" Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Tony (Richard Beymer) from the Jets falls in love with Maria (Natalie Wood) whose brother Bernardo (George Chakiris) belongs to the Sharks. Can these two star-crossed lovers surmount the racial and ethnic barriers in their way, or will they be just two more victims of intolerance, misunderstanding, and mistrust? With a truly amazing Bernstein score, the incredible Robbins choreography, heartbreaking songs by Sondheim, innovative camera work by director Robert Wise, and unforgettable performances by a luminous Natalie Wood and a smoldering Rita Moreno (in her Oscar-winning role as Anita), it's no wonder this classic garnered ten Academy Awards. JURASSIC PARK (1993) - When billionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) successfully clones dinosaur embryos and plans to open an amusement park featuring his "creations", he enlists the help of mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and his assistant Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern). But when Hammond's young grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello) join the group in a tour of the park, things start to go horribly wrong. Adapted by Stephen Spielberg from the novel by Michael Crichton, this is the film that bedazzled us with the most breathtakingly realistic dinosaurs ever seen on screen. Spielberg's fantastic art direction, innovative camera techniques, and uncompromising technical quality are on full display. Two decades and a couple of sequels later, Jurassic Park still remains the touchstone for any movie starring 65-million-year-old reptiles. Three richly deserved Oscars: Best Sound, Best Sound Effects, and Best Visual Effects. [more...]

SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959) - The classiest and screwiest classic screwball comedy of all time! Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon), a couple of down-on-their-luck musicians, witness a gangland massacre perpetrated by crime lord Spats Columbo (George Raft) and have to get out of town fast. Disguising themselves as women, Joe (now Josephine) and Jerry (now Daphne) seek refuge with an all-girl band fronted by torch singer Sugar Kane Kowalczyk (Marilyn Monroe). Off they go to Florida with the Mob in full pursuit! Hilarity and mayhem ensue as "Josephine" attempts to woo Sugar and "Daphne" is wooed by millionaire Osgood Fielding III (Joe E. Brown). Inspired casting, sparkling dialogue, and a mesmerizing performance by an incredibly voluptuous Marilyn Monroe ensured that Billy Wilder won the Oscar for Best Director that year. Tony Curtis won Best Actor in a Leading Role. [more...]

MAD MAX (1979) - Policeman Max Rockatowsky (Mel Gibson) attempts to bring law and order to a dystopian future Australia where society is crumbling, oil is scarce, and motorcycle gangs rule the highways. Max's personal world is destroyed when his wife and child are murdered and vengeance becomes his only option. Mel Gibson delivers an exhilarating performance as the tragic, flawed hero and his menacing presence dominates the film. This independent Australian film was George Miller's directorial debut and was the movie that launched Mel Gibson's career. It also was a very early contender in the post-apocalyptic film genre - a genre that continues to build momentum well into the 21st century. In this current age of blue-screen shots and digital explosions, it's refreshing to note that all the stunts and destruction on the screen are real. The cars and motorcycles actually crash and things actually explode! [more...]
